Advice for the community support worker in providing ongoing support

The advisor/enabler should continue to provide support to the church after the first six months of the process in three key areas:

Ongoing capacity building of the core group
• Team building
• Helping the group decide on their roles and functions
• Helping the group to plan further initiatives
• Helping them to think through how they recruit and manage volunteers
• Helping the group develop basic meeting and committee skills

Raising awareness and training core group members in legal and other responsibilities:
• Child protection
• Health and safety
• Data protection
• Financial record-keeping
• Equal opportunities
• Staff Recruitment & Management
• Volunteer Management
• Registering as a charity or social enterprise
• Ensuring sustainable funding
• Working in partnership with others

Encouraging ongoing spiritual reflection
• Helping the church leadership to provide pastoral support to the core group
• Asking questions and prompting reflection on how the church initiatives link in with the spiritual work of the church
• Encouraging the church leadership to ensure the church is providing prayer support for the work

Tearfund runs training in many of the above areas.
