Disaster Risk Reduction

The number of disasters, and those affected by them in the developing world, is steadily rising. Three times more people were affected by disasters in the 1990s than in the 1970s, and economic losses were five times higher. The situation is expected to worsen, as the IPCC predict that the incidence and severity of floods and droughts worldwide is likely to increase with global warming during the 21st century. With each new disaster in developing countries, precious gains in poverty eradication are lost. Therefore, disaster risk reduction with vulnerable communities, is essential to protect life, infrastructure, health and livlihoods.
