Commission for Africa

In 2004, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair established a Commission for Africa, made up of leading political figures from Africa and around the world, to report on the key issues required to help Africa out of poverty.

They have been consulting civil society in the UK, in Africa and in other rich nations and released a report on 11 March 2005 which will inform the discussions of the G8 leaders when they meet in Scotland in July 2005.

Tearfund carried out a series of interviews with leading evangelical Christians from all around Africa and asked them to make recommendations to the Commission for Africa.  They highlighted the importance of faith in Africa and the role that the Church can play in helping development.  They also spoke about, among other things, improving governance, the need for trade justice and improvements required in the response to HIV and AIDS. A summary of these interviews is available here.
