UN Commission on Sustainable Development

At the 12th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-12) in April 2004, states reviewed progress and obstacles in implementing water, sanitation and human settlements commitments.

A consortium of NGOs - Birdlife/RSPB, Care-UK, Green Cross International, Oxfam, Tearfund, Water Aid, and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) - has been established to encourage governments to make progress on these issues.

In 2004 and 2005 the Commission is focusing on following up commitments made on water resources, water and sanitation and human settlements at the World Summit on Sustainable Development and previous UN environment conferences. The consortium is producing a series of five briefing papers in the run up to the meeting in April 2005.
Implementing effective integrated water resource management strategies delivers a healthier environment providing essential human needs.
Access to safe water and adequate sanitation is the foundation of health and a key step out of poverty. But water and sanitation poverty is deepening in the developing world, caused by and contributing to other forms of deprivation and powerlessness.
Water and sanitation are a fundamental building block for poverty reduction, community empowerment and sustainable development.
